James S. Santy Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2015, this scholarship recognizes the contributions of young people within Walworth County and honors the legacy of Jim Santy, who passed away January 2015. Jim lived life with purpose and was extremely active in volunteer service in and around the Delavan-Darien community. He was instrumental in furthering United Way efforts and the merging of Delavan-Darien and Geneva Lakes United Way organizations in 2009.

Purpose:  This scholarship is designed to recognize young people that have demonstrated a commitment to serving Walworth County by making a positive impact on our community and honoring the legacy of James S. Santy.

Eligibility:  Only Walworth County high school graduates from the Class of 2017 are eligible. The student must be a resident within Walworth County.  Family and household members of UWWC staff, Board of Directors, and Scholarship Selection Committee are ineligible to receive this award.

The Award:  One recipient will receive a onetime award of $1,000.

Selection Criteria:  The Santy Scholarship will be awarded to a high school graduate who has demonstrated commitment to community service and the extent to which the applicant has impacted his or her own community through leadership or service and possibly pursuing a non-profit education or career path [not mandatory]. The Selection Committee will also consider personal circumstances. Your submission will be judged on the content and quality of your responses to the application questions. This is not a need based or academic achievement based scholarship but may be taken into consideration.

Application Procedure:  All individuals who meet the eligibility requirements can submit an application. Applications must be submitted online at www.uw-wc.org; by mail; or presented in person at the United Way of Walworth County office. The application must be postmarked and/or received no later than March 24, 2017.  Applicants selected to be finalists may be required to participate in a personal interview.  It is expected that the award recipients will be notified in a timely fashion in anticipation of the start of their college term.

Verification/References:  Include with your application at least two reference letters verifying your volunteerism and the impact your efforts have had on others. These reference letters may be from the recipient of the services or the community organization for which you have provided services. One letter of reference may be included from an educator (teacher, principal, or counselor) regarding your character. Please include one copy of a utility bill verifying your home address.

Letters of Acceptance:  Please include copies of any letters of admission or acceptance from qualifying educational institution.

Application Checklist:  This application becomes complete and valid only if you have included the following materials by the deadline:  Completed application, Utility bill, and Letters of verification and reference.  Incomplete applications will not be processed.
